MST50119 Diploma of Applied Fashion Design and Merchandising

The qualification MST50119 Diploma of Applied Fashion Design and Merchandising is designed for those working in or wishing to work as a fashion designer or in a support role. Credit or RPL may be given for those who already hold a MST40516/MST40519 Certificate IV in Applied Fashion Design and Merchandising or another similar qualification, or for those who are already working in the industry and have accumulated equivalent knowledge and skills in Fashion Design, Fashion Marketing and Fashion Merchandising.

This course covers the development of complete garment design and manufacture fashion design schemes, working with either a self developed or client brief and within project parameters. It also includes specialist design areas such as textile design and patternmaking.
Our course reflects real industry needs and prepares our graduates to be:
• self employed as a fashion designer or fashion stylist,
• in-house fashion designer or fashion retailer.

This fashion designer’s work involves the self-directed application of knowledge and skills, with substantial depth in some areas where judgement is required in planning and selecting appropriate equipment, materials and techniques for yourself and others.

Job Roles/Employment Outcomes
This qualification is typically used to develop a breadth, depth and complexity of skills and knowledge covering simple garments and aesthetic presentation to meet the purpose, efficiency and comfort of the garment and encourage the principles of environmental sustainability. It covers a detailed understanding of the application and effect of colour and pattern in fabrics and the application of historic fashion styles and their relationship to design periods and historic uses of fashion.

Fashion designers work in many different commercial and community contexts across the fashion manufacture and retail industries. The course will prepare you to working in a junior, support or generalist role and your work may include or have links to areas such as fashion stylist, brand manager, colour consultant or retail buyer and you may work as an in-house fashion designer or as a consultant in fashion departments of retail stores.

Pathways into the Qualification/Entry Requirements:
There are no specific entry requirements for this course and credit will be given towards this qualification to those who have completed the MST40516/MST40519 Certificate IV in Applied Fashion Design and Merchandising or another similar qualification, or to those who have achieved equivalent industry experience through our Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process. Normally APC Design School would consider two years full time working in fashion design or related field as being suitable experience, however applicants who consider that they have a suitable range of experiences can discuss this with the Design Registrar during their face to face interview.
To ensure that people entering this qualification have the necessary initial skills and knowledge to complete the course successfully they must be able to show evidence for:
• Be over the age of 18
• Have an appropriate level of Language, Literacy and Numeracy skills to complete the course

This information will be gathered in the form of birth certificate or passport and Senior Secondary Certificate or LLN test as part of your enrolment process.

Course Duration
Diploma course duration depends on; a students pre existing qualifications and experience, a students full time or part time status and study commitment and finally the pace at which the student studies. Our Diplomas can be studied full-time or part time with the student deciding on their own study pace by enrolling in either one or two subjects per Term. Normal duration is one year full-time; two years part-time.

It is expected that the student will allow 10 hours (part time) to 20 hours (full time) per week for their classes and home and work study. APC Design School’s academic year is divided into 8 terms of study per year, with enrolments in January, February, April, May, July, August, October and November of each year.

Creating fashion designs comes from an understanding of core principles, including a technical foundation, fabrics and their uses, and the ability to present your finished designs. In this subject students will identify the morphological components of the human form related to the female cut. They will develop the ability to draft master blocks for women’s wear and understand the vocabulary used in relation to the cut of ladies garments. This subject guides learners through the construction of individual garments, creating the right silhouette, fitting to a model and using the right fabrics and finishing to achieve their designs.

Fabric supports design. A well-chosen fabric can enhance the design in its appearance, hand feel and wear ability. Well-balanced collections have a selection of fabrics, from woven to jersey and knitwear. It is the blending of different fabrics together that can give diversity and strength to a collection. Choosing the right fabric for a design comes from an understanding of fibres and fabric construction. This subject will enable students to recognise different cloth suitable for their chosen designs, identifying a wide range of fibres and fabrics used in the clothing industry.

VDIS10042 Fashion Design Processes

Fashion Design Processes covers a selection of fundamental skills for fashion designers. From the ability to analyse colour and create textures through to sketching and drawing skills to illustrate their designs. Combined with history of fashion in the 20th Century students will develop an understanding of past fashions and how they influence us today.

The subject will cover an analysis of the most important economic, social, political and technological factors in the 20th century that have had an impact on fashion development and demand.

Student Study Term 4

VDIS10044 Fashion Studio Processes

Students will be guided through Design Studio processes to follow industry practice. Students will simulate a research trip overseas to design and create their collection of three design concepts which they will ‘manufacture’
and analyse costs as buying samples. Designed for their client target market profile, the client will guide the student through the design brief requirements, giving feedback to the students. Students will learn the importance of
industry standard time lines / critical paths and implement these during this assessment task. Industry practices and codes of practice will be incorporated through the use of manufacturing specification sheets, supplier quotes / lead times, production requirements and costing sheets.
Student Study Term 3

VDIS10140 Fashion Innovation and Practice

Upon completion of this subject students will gain an understanding of fashion trend cycles, the adoption of fashion trends and how globalisation and technology have impacted the fashion industry and the fashion supply chain. Students will have the skill set required to analyse statistical data, use it to interpret market trends and developments and make recommendations for future marketing strategies.

The technical foundation of garment creation evolves from two different methods of creation. The first is pattern drafting, using formula to create basic blocks, which are then adapted into garments. The second method is using a dress form or model to create designs in a 3D capacity. This method is known as draping.
This subject will guide students through the creation of more complex pattern cutting methods used in tailoring and draping. Students will design a three piece evening or wedding outfit including a tailored formal dress jacket, kimono or cape, and a complimentary two piece evening draped bodice and bias cut fully lined skirt for a specific customer profile.
Student Study Term 4

VDIS10045 Fashion Promotion

Fashion Promotion sees students work on a number of interconnected projects to develop an understanding of target markets which enable a designer to select fabric, colours, prints and design with a particular customer in mind. A clear understanding of who that customer is, and how they shop allows a designer to create specifically for their needs and desires, and therefore make their collections a success.
Throughout, students must consider climate change and sustainability in the fashion industry, and particularly in their own working environment.
